Simplified Wreck Survey
The historical wreck site of the heavy-lift vessel MIGHTY SERVANT 2 is located near the Riau Islands, Indonesia, in the South China Sea region at coordinates 0° 49.8' S, 104° 27.0' E. On November 5, 1999, the vessel sank in 35 meters of water, coming to rest on her port side with approximately 5 meters of structure showing above the water line. A detailed survey determined that the welded steel hull suffered severe structural damage consistent with impacting an uncharted, single isolated granite pinnacle lying directly on the ship's course, which ripped an 85-meter gash along the hull. A precise hydrographic survey by Fugro pinpointed the bow at position 0° 49.80' S, 104° 27.05' E and the stern at position 0° 49.78' S, 104° 26.97' E. By July 2000, major salvage operations refloated the vessel using buoyancy aids to enable the recovery of her cargo production module. Both the wreck and the production module were fully lifted and removed in the second half of 2000, successfully clearing the underwater hazard from official navigational charts.
