The KUMALA is a documented deep water shipwreck located at coordinates 0 54.667 S, 104 22.5 E (00 54 40S, 104 22 30E) in the Berhala Strait (Selat Berhala), off the coast of Indonesia. First reported in 1979 following a sinking incident, the position of this underwater wreck was initially subject to an English translation error from original Indonesian Notice to Mariners records. This discrepancy caused the underwater obstruction to be incorrectly charted north of the equator across several international hydrographic surveys and nautical charts, including British Admiralty, US, German, and Singapore charts. Official chart corrections subsequently confirmed that the KUMALA wreck sank south of the equator in the Berhala Strait, leading hydrographic offices to delete the erroneously charted position approximate (DW PA) north of the equator.

IN 1981 US 72130 SHOWED THE WK NORTH, AND IN 1993 THE WK WAS SHOWN NORTH ON BOTH US AND GERMAN CHARTS. IT WAS INCORRECTLY INSERTED NORTH BY BR STD ACTION ON BA CHARTS FROM THE US AND GERMAN CHARTS. [RECORD 46000 REFERS.] INCORRECTLY CHARTED WK SHOWN ON SINGAPORE 202 [NOV '04 EDN], BUT NOT ON INDONESIAN 42 [CORRECT TO WK 34/04]. NM ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN BY CHART BRANCH TO DELETE DW PA N OF EQUATOR.
