The shipwreck of the Royal Adelaide lies off the coast of Chesil Beach in Dorset, England, located at coordinates 50 34.653 N, 002 28.534 W. This underwater obstruction consists of a broken-up wreck measuring approximately 15 meters in length with a structural height of 1.5 meters. The site remains in a general depth of 11.5 meters, with a least multibeam depth of 9.51 meters recorded over the wreckage. Survey data confirms the wreckage lies on a 165/345-degree axis with the bow facing northwest. Historical survey details identify debris including a fore-deck winch and chain locker, indicating the vessel is substantially broken up on the seabed. There is no evidence of scouring at the site. The wreck is classified as an underwater obstruction and is monitored for maritime safety.

Circumstances of loss
BUILT OF IRON IN 1864 BY GIBBS, BRIGHT & CO, BRISTOL. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY MERCHANS TRADING CO LTD. PASSAGE LONDON FOR SYDNEY, NSW. RAN ON TO CHESIL BEACH, DURING STRONG SW'LY GALE AND BROKE UP IMMEDIATELY. MANY CASES OF SPIRITS WERE WASHED ASHORE AND BROKEN OPEN BY ONLOOKERS. BY DAYLIGHT IT WAS FOUND 20 HAD DIED OF EXCESS ALCHOHOL. OF 35 PASSENGERS, 32 CREW, SIX DROWNED. (DODS).
