Simplified Wreck Survey

The shipwreck of the general cargo vessel Marianne Gen is located at coordinates 51 16.833 N, 4 19.037 E in the southern North Sea off the coast of Belgium between navigational buoys 101 and 103. Sinking in a general depth of 12 meters with a starboard list, the wreck was initially visible at high water and marked by a light buoy before removal operations were successfully executed in two pieces by the contractor Smit-Tak of Rotterdam in June 1983.

Circumstances of loss

30.10.79 BUILT 1960 BY ORENSTEIN-KOPPEL & LUBECKER MASCH., LUBECK. ON PASSAGE ROUMANIA TO ANTWERP, IN COLLISION WITH GREEK MV EMPROS IN FRONT OF ENTRANCE TO VAN CAUWELAERT LOCK. VESSEL WAS BEACHED WITH HELP OF 6 TUGS AT KETELPLAAT WHERE SHE SETTLED INTO THE MUD. DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS WHEN SALVAGE ATTEMPTS FAILED. EVENTUALLY CUT UP & REMOVED. (LL, 30.10.79 & MSD)
