The shipwreck HMS Marigold is located in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Algeria at coordinates 36 49 N, 3 6.5 E. Originally reported sunk in 1943 following naval engagement, historical survey records initially placed the wreck in approximately 40 to 50 fathoms of water. While the site was charted for several decades as a non-dangerous wreck with a position approximate, modern hydrographic surveys conducted in 2001 and subsequently reviewed in 2007 found no physical evidence of the vessel at this location. Consequently, the wreck status for HMS Marigold at 36 49 N, 3 6.5 E is officially recorded as dead, meaning the obstruction is no longer considered present or a navigational hazard in the specified area.

Circumstances of loss

BRITISH NAVY CORVETTE, BUILT 1941 BY H. ROBB, WAS BOMBED AND SUNK BY ENEMY AIRCRAFT W OF THE STRAITS OF GIBRALTAR. THREE OFFICERS AND 46 RATINGS WERE KILLED. HMS MARIGOLD WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SINKING OF U-433, WHICH ITSELF HAD BEEN CREDITED WITH THE SINKING OF HMS ARK ROYAL. (DODS). SUNK OFF ALGIERS BY AERIAL TORPEDO AIRCRAFT. 49 LIVES LOST. (WARSHIP LOSSES WWII).
