THE WK IS NOT SHOWN ON CURRENT COPY OF SPANISH 123A, RECEIVED JAN 1925, NOR ON EARLIER COPY RECEIVED MARCH 1902. H1938/25 23.3.25 WK ERASED. (ADMIRALTY). AMENDED TO DEAD. DELETE. BR STD.

Circumstances of loss

VESSEL, BUILT 1879. TRAINING CORVETTE, OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY THE GERMAN NAVY. A THREE MASTED TOPSAIL SCHOONER WITH AUXILLIARY ENGINES. SANK DURING BAD WEATHER WHEN HER ANCHORS FAILED TO HOLD, THE CABLES WERE CUT AND THE SHIP HEADED FOR OPEN SEA UNDER STEAM. UNFORTUNATELY THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH STEAM AND SHE WAS DRIVEN ONTO THE E BREAKWATER OF THE OUTER HARBOUR. SHE SANK IN AN UPRIGHT POSITION. A NUMBER OF HER CREW TOOK TO THE RIGGING AND WERE RESCUED. OF A CREW OF 460, 38 WERE DROWNED, INCLUDING THE CAPTAIN, NEARLY 100 INJURED THROUGH BEING DASHED UPON THE ROCKS. (DODS).
