Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1939. WITH HMS GLOUCESTER WAS ENGAGED AS SUPPORT TO PART OF FORCE PREVENTING ITALIAN SUPPLY CONVOYS RUNNING FROM GREECE TO CRETE. WHILST UNDER HEAVY ATTACK FROM GERMAN AIRCRAFT GLOUCESTER WAS BOMBED & SUNK S OF MILOS, WHILST FIJI WAS HIT & DAMAGED, SLOWING HER SPEED. JUST AFTER NIGHTFALL SHE CAME UNDER A SECOND ATTACK & WAS SUNK OFF ANTIKITHERA.
