Simplified Wreck Survey

This UK Hydrographic Office survey record details a former underwater wreck site located at coordinates 58 10.27 N, 2 30.72 W in the Moray Firth, North Sea, off the coast of Scotland. The site was first detected on August 23, 2000, using Differential GPS (DGPS) and an echo sounder during a search for a seabed fastener. The echo sounder recorded a least depth of 52 meters in general seabed depths of 55 meters. The site was not dived, and a commercial guard was requested before being removed on August 10, 2007. On November 26, 2012, a multibeam sonar survey re-examined the location and found no evidence of any structure. Having been officially disproved, the wreck record status was amended to dead.

(J LEIGH/B HUMBY, LTR DTD 15.8.00). INS AS WK 52MTRS. BR STD. 10.8.07 COMMERCIAL GUARD REMOVED. MORE THAN 5 YEARS. 26.11.12 NOT LOCATED BY M/B. DISPROVED. (P ROBERTSON, HI 1372 REPLY TO APPRAISAL DTD 21.11.12). AMEND DEAD.

Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1912 BY THE LONDON & GLASGOW SB CO. TURBINE ENGINES OF 25000 SHP FOR 32 KNOTS. STRUCK A MINE WHICH HAD BEEN LAID BY THE GERMAN RAIDER METEOR. BROKE IN TWO AND SANK. 70 MEN LOST.
