(CDR BALDWIN LTR DTD 3.1.79). 23.10.81 HAS BEEN SUBJECT OF SALVAGE OPS IN ENGINE & BOILER ROOMS USING EXPLOSIVES. OTHERWISE FAIRLY INTACT EXCEPT FOR BRIDGE STRUCTURE & FUNNEL. HAS SEVERE DAMAGE TO FOC'SLE DECK. 'A' TURRET DOES NOT EXIST. LISTS SOME 20 DEG TO PORT & LIES IN GEN DEPTH OF 65 FT. (A BALDWIN, LTR DTD 17.10.81). 28.2.84 LIES UPRIGHT, BOWS S, IN ABOUT 85 FT OF WATER. COMPLETELY BROKEN ACROSS IN SEVERAL PLACES & SILTED UP. SUPERSTRUCTURE MISSING & SO IS DECKING ABOVE ENGINE ROOM. BOILERS, TURBINES & OTHER MACHINERY SCATTERED ALONG LENGTH OF ENGINE ROOM. ONLY 1 TORPEDO TUBE REMAINS. THE AFTER GUN IS IN ITS ORIGINAL POSN, ELEVATED TO PORT AT ABOUT 15 DEG. FOR'D GUN HAS COLLAPSED INTO HULL. MIDSHIPS GUN IS MISSING. APPLICATION TO PURCHASE WK MADE BY PAUL MARTINO, NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA. (N/SS71B/2396, D OF C/SS MINUTE OF 21.2.84). 6.8.84 CONSIDERED BY NAVAL LAW TO BE A WAR GRAVE. BUILT IN 1918 BY HAWTHORN, LESLIE & CO. YARROW BOILERS, TURBINE ENGINES OF 27000SHP FOR 31 KNOTS. 3 X 4 INCH GUNS, 5 SMALLER. 4 TORPEDO TUBES. SUNK WHILE OPPOSING A JAPANESE LANDING AT ENDAU, MALAYA. SUPPORTED BY AUSTRALIAN DESTROYER HMAS VAMPIRE & RAF SHORE BASED BOMBERS. THE ENEMY FORCE COMPRISED A CRUISER AND THREE DESTROYERS. VAMPIRE WAS UNDAMAGED.
