Simplified Wreck Survey
The underwater wreck of the vessel CLAVERING is located off the North East coast of England at the outer end of the North Gare Sands near the mouth of the River Tees. The wreck site is currently identified by the coordinates 54 38.979 N, 1 8.725 W. Historical records indicate the vessel was dispersed in 1908 and 1924, resulting in a well-broken and scattered wreckage site split into two distinct parts. A 2018 hydrographic survey confirmed the presence of a well-defined wreck measuring 108 meters in length, 28.5 meters in width, and 3.2 meters in height. The site sits in a general water depth of 7 meters with a least multi-beam depth of 3.82 meters recorded. The wreck features significant scour measuring 118.3 meters in length and 1.3 meters deep, oriented towards 320 degrees. The vessel remains a documented underwater obstruction with a recorded orientation of 309/129 degrees. Historical reports note the presence of cargo including pig iron and pitch within the debris field. The site is monitored as a significant maritime navigation hazard and is marked on nautical charts as a foul area.

H7582/25 21.4.31 DISPERSED IN 1908. EXAMINATION OF LANDWARD PART ON 7.5.24 SHOWED WRECKAGE SPREAD ABOUT, THIS WAS AFTER BEING LIFTED AND THE AREA SWEPT. THE SEAWARD PART WAS FOUND TO BE THE GREATER OF THE VESSEL WITH SAND SCOURED AWAY. FURTHER DISPERSED 1924, THE CONTRACT BEING PASSED AS SATISFACTORILY CARRIED OUT. LANDWARD PART EXAMINED BY DIVERS ON 13.8.29 WHEN IT WAS FOUND THAT PIECES OF PIG IRON & SCRAP WRECKAGE WERE LYING LEVEL WITH THE GROUND. SEAWARD PART EXAMINED BY DIVERS ON 14.6.29 WHEN IT WAS FOUND THAT SANDING UP HAD OCCURED TO A CONSIDERABLE EXTENT SINCE THE PREVIOUS EXAMINATION. THERE IS QUITE A LOT OF PITCH [PART OF THE CARGO] ON TOP OF THIS WK. EXCEPT FOR THE SANDING UP CONDITIONS HAVE NOT CHANGED SINCE THE LAST DISPERSAL AND EXAMINATION.
