Simplified Wreck Survey
The shipwreck Cathay is an underwater obstruction located in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Algeria near the port of Algiers. Historical survey records for the wreck site at coordinates 36 44.5 N, 5 6.5 E track the evolution of the obstruction from its initial status as a ship with visible masts to its current classification as a submerged wreck. Originally reported in 1943, the vessel was mapped with its bow at 36 44.34 N, 05 06.34 E and its stern at 36 44.32 N, 05 06.42 E. Over several decades, the site was marked by various navigation buoys including conical and flashing green lights to warn mariners. Survey data from 1961 identified a depth of 6 fathoms over the wreckage. By 1971, updated hydrographic charts positioned the obstruction at 36 44.30 N, 05 06.30 E with a measured depth of 12 meters. The site was officially recorded as dead and deleted from active navigational hazard lists by 1984. The Cathay remains a documented underwater site in Mediterranean maritime records.
