Circumstances of loss

VESSEL, BUILT 1948 BY SWAN, HUNTER & WIGHAM RICHARDSON, WALLSEND-ON-TYNE. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY ROTARY TRAFFIC SPA DI NAVIGAZIONE. ON PASSAGE FROM ORAN TO SALERNO. WHILST ATTEMPTING TO ENTER SALERNO HARBOUR DURING A VERY SEVERE STORM WAS HURLED AGAINST A BREAKWATER AFTER HER ENGINES FAILED, RESULTING IN HER BREAKING UP & SINKING IMMEDIATELY. TWELVE MEN DIED WITH ONLY ONE SURVIVOR BEING WASHED OVERBOARD FROM THE SHIP'S DECK OVER THE BREAKWATER INTO THE SAFE WATERS OF THE HARBOUR. (MSD).
