Simplified Wreck Survey

The shipwreck SAMBA is located off the coast of the Ness of Sound, Shetland, at coordinates 60 7.678 N, 1 9.369 W. Originally grounded on the rocks at Ruggen, the vessel wreckage is distributed along a rocky slope. Divers report that an anchor chain remains visible on the rocks, leading down to sections of the wreck at a depth of 20 meters. Further down the slope, at a general depth of 35 meters, the largely intact forepeak lies on its port side alongside a large tank. The site is well broken up, with the main structure standing approximately 5 meters off the seabed and a charted depth of 15 meters over the obstruction. Records indicate the vessel sank following a grounding incident, and the site has been surveyed and documented for maritime interest.

28.12.56 EX-HMS OLIVE, MINESWEEPING TRAWLER, BUILT IN 1940 BY HALL RUSSELL, ABERDEEN. SOLD OUT OF SERVICE IN 1948 TO A SWEDISH COMPANY, RENAMED 'SAMBA' AND COVERTED TO CARRYING FUEL OIL. PASSAGE ROTTERDAM FOR ODDA. REPORTED LEAKING & WITHOUT POWER IN BAD WEATHER. DRIFTED FOR TWO DAYS WHILE VARIOUS ATTEMPTS TO TOW HER FAILED. ABANDONED, CREW RESCUED & EVENTUALLY GROUNDED ON ROCKS AT RUGGEN, NESS OF SOUND ON 28.12.56. NO SIGN OF VESSEL ON FOLLOWING DAY. PRESUMED TO HAVE BROKEN UP & SUNK IN DEEP WATER.
