Simplified Wreck Survey

Underwater wreck and obstruction report for position 51 22.255 N, 1 38.44 E located off the coast of Kent near the Thames Estuary. This site, historically designated as a non-dangerous wreck, has undergone multiple hydrographic surveys since 1928. Initial reports from 1953 identified a large hump with three thin spikes and a 51ft least depth. Later surveys identified this area as a debris field measuring 55 meters by 30 meters, characterized by scattered debris partially buried under a thin veneer of sediment on a high reflectivity seabed. Despite previous classifications including a charted depth of 15.5 meters, recent multibeam sonar surveys conducted in 2017 and 2018 failed to locate the object, resulting in the site being classified as dead. The seabed composition in this sector is primarily sand and shell, and the site is currently charted as foul ground rather than a distinct wreck.

AN AREA OF SCATTERED DEBRIS, OBSERVED AS MINOR LOW REFLECTIVITY CONTACTS ON A GENERALLY HIGH REFLECTIVITY SEABED. NO HARD SONAR CONTACTS ENCOUNTERED, SUGGESTING WK/DEBRIS IS PARTIALLY BURIED AND COVERED BY A VENEER OF SEDIMENT. (GARDLINE, HI 707). CHART AS FOUL. BR STD.
