Simplified Wreck Survey
The shipwreck NEG CHIEFTAIN was historically located off the coast of Dover in the English Channel at coordinates 51 19.208 N, 1 27.479 E. The vessel originally sank in 1983, lying on its port side and partially awash before being marked by a north cardinal buoy. Following salvage operations by the crane barge Taklift I in 1984, surveys indicated that while most of the vessel was removed, minor wreckage debris remained on the seabed. Subsequent hydrographic examinations and magnetometer surveys confirmed the site as foul ground due to potential seabed obstructions. However, a comprehensive multibeam survey conducted in 2019 failed to locate any significant structural remains at the position. As a result, the shipwreck record for the NEG CHIEFTAIN has been amended to dead status, indicating the obstruction is no longer considered a hazard to navigation at these coordinates.
