Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1934 BY CAMMELL LAIRD. WAS ONE OF A LARGE ESCORTING FORCE TAKING AN IMPORTANT CONVOY THROUGH CENTRAL MED, WHEN THEY WERE ATTACKED AFTER BEING SIGHTED BY ITALIAN SCOUTING AIRCRAFT. HMS FEARLESS WAS THE ONLY VESSEL TO SUFFER ANY VITAL DAMAGE HAVING BEEN HIT BY A TORPEDO FROM A BOMBER. THE CREW WERE TRANSFERRED TO OTHER SHIPS & AS IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO TAKE HER IN TOW, SHE WAS SUNK BY BRITISH FORCES. ONE OFFICER & 24 RATINGS KILLED. (DODS).
