Simplified Wreck Survey
The underwater wreck known as the Hetty, also referred to locally as Pig Iron, is located in the North Sea off the coast of North Yorkshire at coordinates 54 33.076 N, 0 32.136 W. This historic shipwreck is the remains of an old iron-hulled vessel that lies well broken up on the seabed. Diving surveys identify the wreckage features, including a stem post, a winch, three anchors at the bow, a compound engine, and one boiler. A distinct pile of pig iron ingots remains in the aft hold, alongside remnants of a brass telegraph head. The wreck, which sits in depths of approximately 50 meters, was originally examined with a least depth of 46 meters. While historically identified by these features and potentially linked to the Hetty, which was lost on July 25, 1894, a multibeam survey conducted in 2016 did not locate the structure, leading to its classification as dead.
