Simplified Wreck Survey
The underwater obstruction historically identified as the potential wreck FREIDIG is located at coordinates 58 51.823 N, 5 0.063 W off the coast of Northern Scotland near Strathy Point and Cape Wrath. Although early reports from 1944 suggested a sunken vessel in this vicinity, modern hydrographic surveys conducted in 2006 by Gardline definitively identified the underwater feature as a natural rock pinnacle rather than a man-made shipwreck. The feature sits in general water depths of 57 to 60 meters with a least echo sounder depth of 55 meters. Historical site investigations characterized the obstruction as a 40-meter by 8-meter structure lying in a north-south orientation, which was previously misidentified as a wreck but is now officially classified as a non-hazardous rock formation on maritime charts.
