Simplified Wreck Survey
The shipwreck known as the Thorold possibly rests in the waters of the Celtic Sea off the coast of Wales near the Smalls, located at coordinates 51 39.659 N, 5 39.194 W. Historical hydrographic survey records from the UK Hydrographic Office trace the documentation of this underwater obstruction starting in November 1972 following reports of a sinking position further north. In July 1979, a sonar contact classified as a probable underwater wreck was located by HMS Hecate during a search area sweep and was provisionally linked to the Thorold at a depth of 50 meters. Subsequent hydrographic investigations by HMS Bulldog in March 1980 failed to confirm the wreck during an area search using Hydrosearch sonar, instead identifying two rocky outcrops that may have been mistaken for marine wreckage, leading to the wreck status being marked as dead. A modern multibeam sonar survey conducted in May 2010 by Fugro OSAE again failed to locate any structural remains, reporting a smooth seabed with no charting action required.
