Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1900 BY HARLAND & WOLFF, BELFAST. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY WHITE STAR LINE. PASSAGE AUSTRALIA FOR LONDON. SIX BOILERS, QUADRUPLE EXPANSION ENGINE OF 641 NHP. WENT ASHORE DUE TO NAVIGATIONAL ERROR IN THICK FOG. 383 PASSENGERS AND 141 CREW RECOVERED. ADDITIONAL CARGO INCLUDED BUTTER, WOOL, SKINS AND WOOD. BOW SECTION WAS CUT AWAY USING EXPLOSIVES AND LEFT ON THE ROCKS. STERN SECTION, INCLUDING THE ENGINE AND BOILER ROOM, WAS REFLOATED AND TOWED TO SOUTHAMPTON. WITH A NEW BOW FITTED AND RENAMED SKITTERN WAS FINALLY LOST IN 1942 WHEN SCUTTLED. (SIBI).
