Simplified Wreck Survey

The shipwreck of the Southern Hunter is located near Deception Island in the Southern Ocean off the coast of Antarctica at coordinates 62 59.9 S, 60 33.4 W. Initially reported as aground in 1957, historical survey records from the UK Hydrographic Office note that the vessel broke up and was extensively salvaged. Later Royal Navy surveys by HMS Endurance confirmed the wreck is well broken up and spread over an area of approximately 100 meters. Structural descriptions from site examinations indicate that the stern section lies against the cliffs at the entrance point, with the boilers located on rocks to the north. Despite being fragmented, the remains of the wreck have historically been noted as conspicuous features in the area.
