Simplified Wreck Survey
The shipwreck of the Saratoga is an underwater wreck located off the coast of Portland Bill in the United Kingdom, at coordinates 50 35.934 N, 2 21.401 W. Originally located in 1981 after a fishing vessel snagged its nets, the sunken vessel was found in very poor material condition with part of the wheelhouse having floated free. Early reports noted dimensions of 61.5 by 17.6 feet with a maximum height of 23 feet and no mast. Subsequent hydrographic surveys by the Royal Navy, including examinations by HMS Gleaner and HMSML Gleaner using advanced positioning equipment like trisponder and DGPS, revealed that the Saratoga is a fully broken up and very broken wreckage lying in a general depth of approximately 21 to 23 meters. The site consists of two major parts and multiple rectangular contacts spread over an area of 40 by 30 meters, standing about 1 to 3 meters high. The least depth over the obstruction is recorded at 21.09 meters, and the remains are considered non-dangerous to general navigation while being largely covered with sand in places.
