Simplified Wreck Survey

Wreck of the Rio Bravo located in the North Atlantic Ocean west of the Azores at coordinates 36 55.867 N, 34 6.867 W. The Rio Bravo sank after developing a severe portside list during 20-foot seas and an onboard fire. This underwater obstruction is situated in deep water and is not currently charted for surface navigation. The wreck site remains in the deep Atlantic basin following its loss in March 1981.

Circumstances of loss

BUILT 1960 BY HARLAND & WOLFF, LTD., BELFAST. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY ANEMOS SHIPPING CO. PASSAGE NEW YORK TO KARACHI. SANK ABOUT 500M W OF THE AZORES, AFTER SUSTAINING A HULL FRACTURE AND FLOODING FOLLOWED BY A FIRE WHICH BROKE OUT. ALL 27 CREW ABANDONED SHIP AND WERE LATER LANDED SAFELY IN BERMUDA. (MSD).
