Initial sinking reports placed the obstruction 11 meters south of Hartlepool, though subsequent sonar and maritime surveys have historically struggled to confirm a definitive structure at the reported site. A 2009 identification linked the name John Miles to coordinates 54 38.092 N, 0 53.333 W, which relates to this general vicinity. A detailed 2016 multibeam survey failed to locate a wreckage or significant obstruction at these coordinates, leading to a status of no further action or dead file. The location remains charted for reference as a potential underwater obstruction near the Hartlepool coastline.
