Simplified Wreck Survey

Located in the English Channel off the coast of West Sussex, south of Littlehampton and Worthing at coordinates 50 37 N, 0 26 W, this historical underwater wreck site was first recorded by the British Admiralty in January 1918 when two masts were observed standing above the water. Classified initially as a dangerous shipwreck, the obstruction was investigated in November 1935 by HMS Flinders using an Oropesa wire sweep, which cleared the location to a depth of 10 fathoms (approximately 18 meters) and revised its status to non-dangerous. Subsequent hydrographic operations, including a 1973 echo-sounder and sonar search by Kelvin Hughes and an extensive area sonar sweep in 1976 and 1977 by HMS Fox, failed to locate any structural remains, leading authorities to amend the charting status to dead. Modern high-resolution hydrographic operations, including an assessment in 2002 and an advanced multibeam bathymetry survey in August 2018, confirmed that no visible wreck or seabed obstruction remains, formally disproving the presence of the vessel at this maritime position.
