Simplified Wreck Survey

Located in Rye Bay along the English Channel off the coast of East Sussex at coordinates 50 55.635 N, 0 48.559 E, this historic underwater obstruction represents the remains of an unidentified wooden shipwreck. Initial maritime surveys identified the vessel as a probable mid-19th century small merchant sailing ship, such as a brig or snow. Underwater inspections revealed an intact wooden hull below the waterline stretching from bow to stern, featuring a flat-bottomed design with a raked stem and a broad stern resting in roughly 10 meters of water at high tide. Evaluated in 1991 by the Archaeological Diving Unit for potential designation as a protected historic wreck, the site proved challenging to pinpoint accurately on navigational charts. A high-resolution multibeam sonar survey conducted in 2013 was unable to detect the wreckage, indicating that the remains have either dispersed, deteriorated, or become buried beneath seabed sediments, leading the hydrographic record to be officially amended to dead.
