The underwater wreck Orion is located at coordinates 49 57.303 N, 5 49.258 W. This small and compact wooden vessel wreck lies oriented NNE/SSW with a length of 18 meters. The site features a least echo sounder depth of 58.7 meters within a general depth of 63 meters. The wreck carries a cargo of wide gauge railway track and iron sleepers. Confirmed as the Orion in 2007, this historic underwater obstruction is charted as a wreck at 58 meters.

Circumstances of loss

CARDIFF TO VERA CRUZ & CARRING A CARGO OF RAILWAY TRACK & WHEEL BARROWS, SPRANG A LEAK ABOUT 10MILES EAST OF THE LIZARD & MADE FOR LAND. SOME OF THE CREW, FEARING FOR THEIR LIVES, ABANDONED SHIP LEAVING THE MASTER & MATE ONBOARD. THE MASTER REFUSED THE ASSISTANCE OF OTHER VESSELS, CLAIMING THAT THE SHIP WAS 'BEYOND HELP', THE VESSEL SUBSEQUENTLY FOUNDED IN 4956.55N, 054845W [OGB]. (SIBI VOL 1).
