Simplified Wreck Survey

The shipwreck MANSFELD lies off the coast of Portugal near the port of Figueira da Foz. The wreck is located at coordinates 40 9 N, 8 52.5 W. Originally a vessel that ran aground on rocks and sustained severe hull damage, the MANSFELD was declared a constructive total loss in 1986. Following extensive salvage operations, including the removal of fuel and the dismantling of the structure for scrap in situ, the site remains as an underwater obstruction. Searchers and mariners should be aware that the remains are well broken and situated approximately 400 meters offshore. This wreck site is tracked under UK Hydrographic Office records H3498/80 and H3539/87.

H3498/80 23.5.86 CONSTRUCTIVE TOTAL LOSS. MAY BE DISMANTLED IN SITU. (LL 16.4.86). H3498/80 14.7.86 NOW OWNED BY CUSTOMS. FUEL BEING REMOVED. WILL PRESUMABLY BE SOLD FOR DEMOLITION IN SITU. (LL 14.6.86). H3539/87 16.6.88 NOW BEING BROKEN FOR SCRAP, IN SITU. (LL 19.5.88). AMENDED TO LIFT.

BUILT IN 1962. OWNED AT THE TIME OF LOSS BY VEB DEUTFRACHT SEEREEDERI. PASSAGE FERROL FOR BARRUCHA TO COLLECT A CARGO OF GYPSUM. RAN AGROUND ON ROCKS DUE TO A FIRE & ENGINE TROUBLE IN HEAVY SEAS. (MSD).
