Circumstances of loss

BUILT 1933 BY PORTSMOUTH DOCKYARD. 3 DRUM BOILERS, TURBINE ENGINES OF 72,000 SHP FOR 32.5 KNOTS. EIGHT 6 INCH, EIGHT 4 INCH AND 14 SMALLER GUNS. 8 TORPEDO TUBES. WHEN OFF TRIPOLI IN COMPANY WITH HM SHIPS AURORA, PENELOPE & KANDAHAR RAN INTO AN ENEMY MINEFIELD & STRUCK THREE MINES IN QUICK SUCCESSION. KANDAHAR RETURNED INTENDING TO TAKE NEPTUNE IN TOW BUT STRUCK A MINE ON THE WAY. NEPTUNE THEN STRUCK A FOURTH MINE & SANK. OF HER COMPLEMENT 47 OFFICERS AND 719 RATINGS (INCLUDING 147 NEW ZEALANDERS) WERE LOST. ABLE SEAMAN NORMAN WALTON WAS THE ONLY SURVIVOR. (DODS ET AL).
