Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1938 BY SWAN HUNTER & WIGHAM RICHARDSON. WHILST SUPPORTING THE BRITISH AND AMERICAN LANDING AT ANZIO, WAS TORPEDOED AND SUNK BY GERMAN DIVE BOMBER WHEN OFF NETTUNO. HER MAGAZINE BLEW UP AND SHE FOUNDERED IN 22 MINUTES WITH HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE. SEVEN OFFICERS AND 155 RATINGS WERE KILLED. HMS JERVIS WAS DAMAGED BY GLIDER BOMB IN THE SAME RAID BUT WAS ABLE TO REACH SAFETY. (BVLAS, DODS, COLLEDGE, THE WAR AT SEA, WARSHIP LOSSES WW2).
