BUILT IN 1906 BY W DENNY & BROS OF DUMBARTON. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY THE BRITISH INDIA STEAM NAVIGATION CO. WAS EMPLOYED ON GOVERNMENT SERVICE AS HOSPITAL SHIP NO 5. SIX BOILERS, THREE TURBINE ENGINES OF 850 RHP FOR 17 KNOTS. MACHINERY BY W DENNY & BROS. PASSAGE SALONICA FOR AVONMOUTH. WAS TORPEDOED AND SUNK BY U 55 WHILST FULLY ILLUMINATED AND CORRECTLY MARKED WITH THE RED CROSS. CARRIED 279 SICK AND WOUNDED PERSONNEL FROM GREECE, MALTA AND GIBRALTAR, 80 MEDICAL STAFF AND A CREW OF 207. DISCIPLINE WAS EXCELLENT AND 14 BOATS LAUNCHED WITHOUT MISHAP. ALL RECOVERED EXCEPT FOR THREE LASCAR CREW MEMBERS
