Simplified Wreck Survey

Wreck information for the German ship HELA located in the North Sea near Helgoland. The underwater obstruction is situated at coordinates 54 05.96 N, 07 52.92 E. Historical records from the UK Hydrographic Office note various sinking positions including 54 06 00N, 07 53 00E and 54 03 00N, 07 55 00E. The vessel was historically documented on German fishery charts at 54 06 26N, 07 53 25E. As of December 2007, the wreck is no longer charted on German maritime maps and the status has been amended to dead. This maritime wreck site is of historical interest in the North Sea region.

Circumstances of loss

BUILT 1895 BY A.G. WESER, BREMEN, WITH TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINES OF 6000IHP CAPABLE OF 20.5 KNOTS. TORPEDOED AND SUNK BY BRITISH SUBMARINE E.9. TOOK AN HOUR TO SINK. ALL BUT 2 OF 178 CREW WERE PICKED UP BY GERMANTRAWLERS. (DODS, WARSHIPS OF WW1, DEUTSCHE KRIEGSSCHIFFE [DIAGRAMS OF VESSEL]).
