Simplified Wreck Survey

The shipwreck of the George and Mary possibly sank off the east side of Brownsman near the Farne Islands at coordinates 55 38.012 N, 1 37.057 W. Initially foundered on February 3, 1977, the site was later examined on August 23, 1999, using DGPS, revealing an area of numerous point contacts covering 82 meters by 60 meters with a height of 0.8 meters and a strong magnetic anomaly indicating possible debris. Although multibeam data from 2020 did not locate the wreck, the obstruction remains classified as foul ground.

Circumstances of loss

WOODEN HULL. ON PASSAGE FOR LONDON WITH CARGO OF COAL. STRUCK THE E POINT OF THE BROWNSMAN DURING A SEVERE E GALE. ALL HANDS LOST.
