The underwater wreck of the vessel CHAPALA is located in the Hooghly River approaches near Kolkata (Calcutta), West Bengal, India, positioned at coordinates 22° 11.709' N, 88° 05.91' E. First officially documented by hydrographic surveys in December 1938 as a charted obstruction, subsequent maritime soundings in June 1939 identified a least depth of 9 feet over the wreck. Later hydrographic surveys in 1978 re-assessed the submerged hazard, recording a least water depth of 2.8 meters. Formally noted as a dangerous wreck on Indian Navigational Charts (including charts 3011, 3013, and 3006) and British Admiralty Chart BA 135, the Chapala represents a significant underwater obstruction for marine navigation in the Bay of Bengal river delta approaches.
