12.12.87 VESSEL EXPERIENCED AN EXPLOSION IN CARGO DURING VERY ROUGH WEATHER AND CAUGHT FIRE. SHE WAS ABANDONED BY CREW AND EVENTUALLY DRIFTED ASHORE, OFF PUNTA ROSTRO, STILL ON FIRE. FURTHER EXPLOSIONS OCCURRED AND NEARBY TOWNS AND VILLAGES HAD TO BE EVACUATED DUE TO FUMES BEING GIVEN OFF. CARGO REPORTED TO INCLUDE CONTAINERS CARRYING SODIUM, ETHANE, ANILINE OILS AND OTHER HIGHLY INFLAMMABLE CHEMICALS. VESSEL, BUILT 1969, WAS ON PASSAGE FROM HAMBURG, ROTTERDAM & AMSTERDAM TO SHANGHAI & HONG KONG. (LL 7-12.12.87). VESSEL BUILT BY FLENSBURGER SCHIFFSBAU-GES, FLENSBURG, WAS OWNED AT THE TIME OF LOSS BY CASON NAVIGATION S.A. 23 OF 31 CREW KILLED. (MSD).
