Simplified Wreck Survey
The shipwreck of the vessel Wiedau is located at coordinates 53 33.5 N, 9 45.5 E in the River Elbe in Germany. The ship capsized on December 22, 1975, following a collision in the River Elbe and initially came to rest aground near the ferry pontoon at Wittenbergen outside navigable waters. Salvage operations were temporarily interrupted in February 1976 due to ice drifting in the river, at which time the wrecks of the Wiedau and Uwe were reported at position 53 33.30 N, 09 45.30 E and marked by temporary green light buoys. The wreck of the Wiedau was successfully raised by salvors on March 14, 1976, transferred to shallow waters at Neesand on the River Elbe, beached southeast of the collision site, and finally towed to Hamburg on April 8, 1976.
