Simplified Wreck Survey
The wreck of the steamship WESTAVON is located off the coast of Essex in the Thames Estuary at coordinates 51 36.615 N, 1 10.997 E. Historical survey records describe the vessel as having two masts, a funnel, and deck structures that were originally visible above high water following its sinking in 1941. Subsequent hydrographic surveys conducted between 1946 and 1976 failed to locate the wreckage despite close examination using echo sounders and sonar. While 1946 reports indicated the site was swept clear to 25 feet, later investigations by the Royal Navy and the Port of London Authority found no trace of the obstruction. As a result, the WESTAVON is currently classified as a dead or non-existent wreck at this location.
