Circumstances of loss
VESSEL, BUILT 1973 BY ASTILLERSO ESPANOLES,S.A., SESTAO. OWNED AT THE TIME OF LOSS BY NAVIERA ARTOLA. STRUCK BOTTOM WHEN ENTERING CORUNNA PORT. VESSEL STARTED LEAKING & WAS TURNED AROUND TO EXIT THE CHANNEL, THE VESSEL STRUCK THE BOTTOM AGAIN & STARTED TO SINK. THE VESSEL GROUNDED WITH A 50DEG LIST. OIL WAS ESCAPING THE HOLDS & THERE WERE SEVERAL EXPLOSIONS, ONE OF WHICH KILLED THE MASTER, OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. SETTLED AS AN CONSTRUCTIVE TOTAL LOSS. BOTH THE STERN & BOW WERE REFLOATED, THE LATTER HAD A NEW FOREPART CONSTRUCTED. THE NEW VESSEL WAS NAMED 'ARGOS' IN 1983 & CONTINUES TO TRADE IN 1996 UNDER THE NAME 'CASTILLO DE QUERMENSO'. (MSD).
