Simplified Wreck Survey
The underwater wreckage of the submarine U 681 is located at coordinates 49 52.479 N, 6 38.699 W in the waters off the southwest coast of the United Kingdom. Originally sunk on March 25, 1945, historical hydrographic surveys have provided detailed structural descriptions of the site. A comprehensive survey conducted on September 18, 2017, recorded the wreck lying at an orientation of 000/180 degrees with a least multibeam depth of 90.47 meters within a general surrounding depth of 95 meters. The site measures approximately 80 meters in length and 20 meters in width, with a height of 4.5 meters. Survey findings indicate that the bulk of the wreck is concentrated toward the southern end of the site, while the northern half is largely broken apart. Earlier examinations noted that the hull was previously intact and lying on its side, but modern data confirms the site has undergone significant deterioration over time.

BOMBED BY USN AIRCRAFT, VPB 103, AFTER BEING WRECKED ON SCILLIES. (GERMAN SUBS. VOL 2). 9.3.44 THOUGHT TO HAVE STRUCK EITHER THE BISHOP ROCK OR THE CREBINICKS ON 9.3.44. BADLY DAMAGED, SHE WAS SIGHTED AND BOMBED BY US LIBERATOR BOMBER. SHE WAS THEN SCUTTLED AND ABANDONED. (CORNISH SHIPWRECKS, VOL 3).
