VESSEL, BUILT IN 1896 BY MATTHEW PEARCE & CO, STOCKTON. KNOWN AS A 'TRUNK DECK' DESIGN AS TWIN LONGITUDINAL BULKHEADS EXTENDED SOME 7 FEET ABOVE THE UPPER DECK AND WERE TOPPED BY THE WINCHES, COAMINGS, VENTILATORS AND MASTS. THIS REDUCED THE LENGTH FOR A GIVEN CAPACITY AND THUS REDUCED CANAL FEES. POWERED BY A COAL FIRED TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINE BY BLAIR & CO. OUTPUT 230 NHP (APPROX 1150 IHP) FOR 12 KNOTS AT 74 RPM. ON PASSAGE FROM NEWPORT TO CETTE. CARGO COAL. SUNK BY GUNFIRE FROM U34 50M S BY E FROM PORT MAHON, MINORCA. (SEA BREEZES, 3.1999).
