Simplified Wreck Survey

The unknown German submarine wreck is located off Oxwich Point in Swansea Bay, Wales, at coordinates 51 32.861 N, 4 8.67 W. Originally reported in 1968 and presumed sunk during World War II in 40 to 45 feet of water, the submerged site lies close to a small tanker on the east side of Oxwich Point. Later local reports from 1982 suggested the vessel rests approximately 300 yards north of the Phoenix Unit, nestled into the curve of the bay and largely covered with sand. However, subsequent attempts to find the remains, including drift dives in 1974 and a multibeam sonar survey by Gardline in September 2017, failed to locate the submarine, leading to its official classification as dead.

ECHO SOUNDINGS OF NO USE DUE TO UNEVENESS OF SEABED. (DR M J O'CANE 10.10.74). 2.10.82 REPORTED TO BE WELL KNOWN LOCALLY AND TO LIE APPROX 300YDS N OF PHEONIX UNIT, JUST N OF OXWICH POINT AND INTO THE CURVE OF THE BAY.
