Historical hydrographic survey records from the UK Hydrographic Office note a least depth of 20.8 meters over the obstruction. Originally documented in French and Brest hydrographic notices, the site was officially identified in 1988 as the German WWII auxiliary minesweeper Sperrbrecher 174.
