Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1948 BY W DOXFORD & SONS, SUNDERLAND. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY ANDREW WIER & CO. PASSAGE PORT PIERI AND VARIOUS OCEANIC ISLANDS FOR THE UK. CARGO INCLUDED LEAD, COPRA, BULK COCOANUT OIL, COPRA EXPELLERS AND COCOA. RAN AGROUND OFF WASHINGTON ISLAND AND BROKE UP. ALL 109 CREW AND PASSENGERS EXCEPT THE 2ND OFFICER SURVIVED. THE US COASTGUARD CUTTER 'WINNEBAGO' RESCUED THE SURVIVORS 12 DAYS LATER HAVING SAILED FROM HONOLULU. (MSD).
