6.7.61 BUILT IN 1951 BY GRANGEMOUTH DOCKYARD CO. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY COMPANHIA NACIONAL DE NAVAGACAO. LEFT BEIRA 6.7.61 FOR QUELIMANE CARRYING PETROL, DIESEL FUEL AND EXPLOSIVES. THERE WERE 495 PASSENGERS, 200 OF WHOM WERE AFRICAN TROOPS, PLUS A CREW OF 54. ANCHORED IN THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER LINDE DURING A HEAVY STORM, BROKE LOOSE AND RAN ON TO A SAND BAR. SHIP FREED HERSELF BUT ON THE MORNING OF THE 9TH FIRE BROKE OUT ON BOARD AND WAS DRIVEN ASHORE AGAIN BY THE HEAVY SEAS. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS THE SHIP WAS WRECKED BY A SERIES OF HEAVY EXPLOSIONS. SIXTEEN OF HER CREW AND 243 PASSENGERS WERE KILLED. (DODS).
