Simplified Wreck Survey

The underwater wreck of the Saltaro forward section is located at coordinates 54 4.672 N, 3 11.989 W within the dredged channel near Barrow in Furness. Originally stranded in 1957 and partially removed, subsequent surveys in 1991 found 60 meters of wreckage extending through the channel. Recent hydrographic surveys from 2024 and 2025 indicate the wreck is not currently located in the multibeam dataset and is possibly buried beneath silt within the Barrow channel.

EX- POLYANNA '55, EX- TORDENE '47. BUILT 1936 BY W GRAY & CO LTD., HARTLEPOOL WITH 3 CYLINDER TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINE, 2 BOILERS, SINGLE SHAFT. MACHINERY BY CENTRAL MARINE ENG. WORKS LTD, HARTLEPOOL. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY KALLSTROM, RAGNAR, STOCKHOLM. ON PASSAGE LULEA, SWEDEN TO BARROW-IN-FURNESS. (SIBI) ON ENTERING BARROW IN FURNESS, HOVE TO IN WALNEY CHANNEL TO ALLOW AN EXITING SUBMARINE TO PASS. WENT AGROUND AND BROKE BACK ON FALLING TIDE. AFTER SECTION WAS REFLOATED AND BROKEN UP. FORWARD SECTION WAS CUT UP IN SITU AND PARTIALLY REMOVED. THAT REMAINING WAS DISPERSED USING EXPLOSIVES.
