Simplified Wreck Survey

Wreck of the vessel Port Richard located off the south shore east of Stanley just opposite The Narrows near the Falkland Islands at coordinates 51 41.611 S, 57 49.653 W. Originally beached as a hulk and condemned at Stanley, historical records note it lying with a port list and bows facing east with decking largely intact in 1985. Later surveys from 2002 describe the structure as well decayed and mainly collapsed with only the boiler, engine, and some ribs visible.

Circumstances of loss

VESSEL, [EX-HMS AFTERGLOW], BUILT 1919 IN LOWESTOFT. BEACHED AFTER BREAKING AWAY IN A GALE IN 1945. WAS USED BY BRITISH GOVERNMENT AS AN ARMED VESSEL FOR THE PROTECTION OF LOCAL SEALING RIGHTS. (FALKLAND ISLAND SHORES, PUBLISHED 1985).
