Circumstances of loss
BUILT IN 1906 BY W DOXFORD & CO, SUNDERLAND. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY PENVEARN SS CO LTD. THREE BOILERS, TRIPLE EXPANSION ENGINE OF 300NHP, SINGLE SHAFT. PASSAGE BARROW-IN-FURNESS FOR BARRY ROADS. TORPEDOED BY U-105 WITH HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE. (SIBI).Positional Analysis: The wreck lies 10.7nm SW of the U-boat(KTB) position and 11.9nm SW of the position given in War Losses (1990). The ship wastowed from the position where it was originally hit.Archival Analysis: The ship did not sink initially and was taken in tow (TNA ADM 137/4102) although the direction of tow is not stated. The initial damage being to the thwartship bunker, which was holed both sides of the ship. The wreck is clearly split in the middle, as seen in the DTM. The ship was reported to have been torpedoed again the following morning, with a hit in the bows causing the ship to sink rapidly from forward. The bow section is only slightly damaged. Note, the ship sank on 2 Mar 1918, not 1 Mar, as generally reported.
