Simplified Wreck Survey

Underwater Wreck Details: The remains known historically as the War Helmet or possibly the Huntsholm are located at coordinates 50 37.469 N, 0 37.59 W in the English Channel off the south coast of England near the Owers. Sunk in 1918 and originally charted with a least depth of 6 fathoms or 11.0 meters, subsequent hydrographic surveys and diver investigations revealed the remains of a wooden vessel structure approximately 30 feet long and standing 7 feet high with no metal features. Later multibeam surveys and magnetometer searches failed to locate the wreck in the vicinity, leading to updates classifying the site as dead and non-existent.

NC 1652. H4121/76 27.1.77 WAS THOUGHT TO BE THE 'WAR HELMET' BUT THIS HAS BEEN LOCATED IN 503723N, 003630W [SEE 19984]. THIS WRECK COULD BE THE 'HUNTSHOLM' SUNK 11.6.17. (HMS FOX, REPORT FOR HI 52/76). H1310/85/7 11.2.85 NO SIGN OF A WK IN THIS POSN. SEARCHED FOR USING MAGNETOMETER & E/S. (T J FRANCIS, 23.1.85). NCA YET. H1310/87/32 17.8.87 REMAINS OF WOODEN WK LOCATED IN 503727N, 003730W [OGB]. DIVERS IDENTIFIED WOODEN SIDE OF A VESSEL, NEARLY 30FT LONG AND STANDING 7FT HIGH. NO EVIDENCE OF METAL OR ANY FEATURE ON THE SEABED. (T FRANCIS, 11.8.87). NCA YET. HH091/002/01 22.10.02 NOT LOCATED, DISPROVED. NOTHING LOCATED IN THE VICINITY THAT COULD BE CONSIDERED TO BE THIS WK.
