Simplified Wreck Survey

The shipwreck METANOL is located at coordinates 56 3.996 N, 2 46.089 W within the Firth of Forth near the Scottish coast. Historical surveying records from the UK Hydrographic Office indicate that the vessel was initially identified at position 56 04.28 N, 02 45.28 W in early 1974. During this period, the wreck site was temporarily marked by a green light buoy with a flashing pattern of GP FL(2)G every 10 seconds. In June 1974, the wreck of the METANOL was successfully lifted and subsequently beached in the area situated between Lamb Island and Fidra Island within the Firth of Forth. Official maritime records confirm that the wreck and its associated navigation buoy were fully removed from the location by August 1974. There is no longer a navigational obstruction at these coordinates.

Circumstances of loss

BUILT IN 1970 BY AST DE T RUIZ DE VELASCO SA, BILBAO. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY NAVIERA QUIMIC SA, BILBAO. 8 CYLINDER OIL ENGINE OF 1100BHP, SINGLE SHAFT. SANK AFTER LEAKAGE OF NITRIC ACID INTO THE DOUBLE BOTTOM CAUSED A LEAK. LATER LIFTED AND BEACHED BETWEEN LAMB ISLAND AND FIDRA ISLAND. (SIBI).
