Circumstances of loss
VESSEL, BUILT 1954 BY CANTIERI NAVALI ACHILLE LUCCESI, VENICE. OWNED AT TIME OF LOSS BY MARITTIMA DEL SUD, S.L.R.. ON PASSAGE FROM MALTA TO FIUMICINO. RAN AGROUND OFF THE FORMICHE ISLANDS, 0.5M FROM PONZA ISLAND. A FIRE BROKE OUT IN THE ENGINE ROOM, WITH SUBSEQUENT EXPLOSIONS. SIX OF THE EIGHT CREW SAFELY ABANDONED THE SHIP, THE MASTER WAS BADLY INJURED & ONE BODY WAS DISCOVERED LATER ON BOARD. THE WRECK WAS ABANDONED AS A TOTAL CONSTRUCTIVE LOSS, BECOMING PRACTICALLY SUBMERGED. (MSD).
